ANNOUNCED: Kamasi Washington
Celebrated American jazz musician and composer Kamasi Washington - hailed as “the high priest of sax” - today confirms two headline performances in March.
The saxophonist extraordinaire will captivate fans at Melbourne’s The Prince on March 22 and Sydney’s Metro Theatre on March 23.
Tickets for both shows will go on sale this Friday, January 15 at 1pm.
Born into a musical family, Kamasi Washington began playing saxophone at the age of 13, later attending the prestigious Hamilton High School of Music followed by UCLA. He has toured and recorded with the likes of Snoop Dogg, Rapahel Saadiq, Kendrick Lamar, Gerald Wilson, Lauryn Hill, Mos Def, Harvey Mason and Chaka Khan, to name a few.
Washington released his groundbreaking solo album, The Epic in May 2015. The triple disc masterpiece was both written and conducted by Washington and fuses elements of jazz, soul, classical, hip-hop and even gospel. Named by The New York Times as the number one album of 2015, The Epic debuted at #1 on the iTunes jazz charts in the US, Canada, Russia, the UK and Australia.
Besides his dynamic live performances, Washington spends much of his time working on movie scores and albums. He also appeared on one of the best hip-hop albums of the past 12 months: Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly.
Washington will take the stage at this year’s Bluesfest (on March 24), plus these two not-to-be missed intimate performances in Melbourne and Sydney this March.
