Shovels & Rope came about when Mississippi-born, Nashville-bred Cary Ann Hearst met Texas-born, Colorado-raised Michael Trent, both busy working on significant solo careers at the time. They instantly connected, musically and personally, finding that their voices – which beautifully entwine through haunting harmonies – and philosophies matched up perfectly.

They released their debut breakthrough album ‘O’Be Joyful’ in 2012, winning Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2013 Americana Music Awards. They toured nearly non-stop with their signature mix of rock, country, punk and folk to sold-out crowds replacing tiny, sweat-soaked dives with larger halls, then major festival audiences at Newport Folk Festival, Coachella, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza.

For a time they had a camera crew following them around for the intimate, revelatory documentary The Ballad of Shovels & Rope which has been captivating the film festival circuit this past year.

Last August saw the release of their highly anticipated sophomore album, Swimmin’ Time, #1 on the Billboard Folk Chart, #2 at Americana Radio for more than a month and debuting at #20 on the Billboard Top 200.

Relying on visceral song-writing and organic sound, he began producing haunting, lo-fi recordings and developing an explosive live performance.

His self-released 2011 debut album, Roll the Bones brought national acclaim and three years later, still ranks near the top of Bandcamp’s digital best-seller charts. America’s NPR Music named him as one of the ten artists music fans “should’ve known in 2012,” describing him as “astonishing…unclassifiably original. And frighteningly good.”

With his new album, And the War Came released earlier this year in the US and due for an Australian release in February (through Cooking Vinyl Australia), Shakey Graves extends the ground – emotionally and sonically – broken by his debut.

"I have always wanted to see Australia and sort of figured it wouldn't happen...” says Rose-Garcia.

“But to get to not only see Australia AND tour it while playing music with one of my favorite bands on the planet, seems like a waking dream."

“As Shakey Graves, Rose-Garcia plays a gnarly c
